As the world closes its borders, SOAS has taken a stand to support displaced people.
In January 2017, we announced a five-year scheme, the SOAS Sanctuary Scholarships, to improve access to higher education for displaced people. The scholarships support six undergraduate and one postgraduate student for displaced people, who cannot access student finance.
SOAS covered the tuition fees for seven scholars each year for five years. However, these scholarships only cover tuition fees; not living costs.
Thanks to the support of the SOAS community, last year we raised an incredible £240,000 to support their living costs and help displaced to study at SOAS. Hundreds of SOAS alumni, staff, students and friends of the School took a stand to support displaced people.
This year, we aim to raise an additional £200,000 to help another seven displaced people to study at SOAS. We need your help to do this.
By making a gift today, you can help a student like Muhammad to access education and break down the barriers to education many displaced people face.
"I wouldn't have been able to afford to study if it wasn't for this scholarship. I came to the UK from Syria with my family and this scholarship has given me the opportunity to create a future for us. I can't thank you enough for your support" – Muhammad Issa (MA Translation 2018), Sanctuary Scholarship recipient
